Six weeks of lessons are now complete and the Manawatu Training Orchestra has begun rehearsal, all signaling a successful start to another year. There are 423 students, including 28 in the orchestra. We have appreciated the communications from parents that have helped our efforts to ensure each student is in the most suitable class for their learning.

Apologies for absences have been gratefully received via text and email. Should an absence occur please notify the Director; telephone or text through an apology to 027 825 6927, or email It is in the student’s best interests to attend lessons in order to ensure consistent progress throughout the year. Thank you also to everyone whose students have arrived at lessons on time. That helps the tutors greatly!

Term dates – Are these on your calendar?
The dates for this term are:
May 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th, June 10th, 17th, 24th, and July 1st.

The Orchestra dates for this term are:
May 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th, June 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th and July 8th.

Changes of class time
Parents are welcome to investigate the possibility of a time change for your child’s lesson if there are clashes with winter sport or other activities. A change of class time depends on a place being available in another suitable class. We need to charge an administration fee of $5.00 per child per change of class time. Please do not attend another class without first getting the permission of the Director or Assistant Director. Tutors may be able to assist with recommendations but final class placements can only be confirmed with the Director.

Saturday Music tutors and volunteers
We welcome Chloe Grapentin and Christina Leong who join volunteer team this term.

Enrolments remain open for Music Basics, Choir class and Manawatu Training Orchestra, until Queen’s Birthday weekend. All other instrumental classes are closed.

Photography and recordings of classes
If you would like to take a photograph or a recording of your child during his/her class, please ask the permission of the class tutor first. If you would like to take a photograph or a recording of all of the students in the class, please ask the permission of the Director or Assistant Director first.

While we are at PNINS …
Just a friendly reminder that there is no food or drink to be consumed inside the classrooms; please ensure classroom equipment is protected from interference; please ensure cars are only parked in the court area – obstruction of alleyways is a potential hazard in an emergency.

Children’s Choir workshop
choirThe Choir Class attended a choral workshop with the students from the Linton Camp School choir, on Sunday 9th April. After 4 hours of training, games, and a sunny lunch break, 45 children performed their achievement to parents. The results were very satisfying. Well done to all the students involved!

Rotary Youth Music Festival
Tutors may have approached students who have been learning for two or more years about the opportunity for an informal performance at the Rotary Youth Music Festival. It is an excellent chance for students to play the music they have been learning to a supportive audience. Saturday Music students are invited to participate in this event on Saturday 28th May from 12:30pm. Students should confirm with their tutor the music they would like to present and then notify the Director who will connect you to the organisers of the festival. Please contact Nigel (Director) for any further information.

Be sure to find an opportunity to support Palmerston North’s young musicians at a local café or eating places, or performance space!

Safety messages – Please remind your child about these
All efforts are made to ensure lessons are conducted with safe procedures. All persons must communicate to us any discovered hazards so these can be addressed as soon as practical. A first aid kit is available at the office should one be needed.
!!! Our greatest hazard is the car parking area !!! Please drive with all due concern for young pedestrians when on the PNINS site.

An evacuation drill will be held this term, weather permitting. Parents will be notified of this when arrangements have been confirmed.

In case of the need for EVACUATION, all persons are to assemble on the grass field in a calm manner where the tutors will attend to confirming all students are present.
