Term 2, 2018

wind classSaturday Music well set for 2018

Our classes are well under way, and in most cases enrolments are now closed (Manawatu Training Orchestra and Music Basics can still be accepted until the end of the week). We have reached the grand total of 422 student places in classes filled. It has been most encouraging hearing how students have already started to make successful progress. We look forward to hearing the fruit of their efforts.

The following are notices and news for your interest!

Attendances
Music BasicsApologies for absences have been gratefully received via text and email. Should an absence occur please notify the Director; telephone or text through an apology to 027 825 6927, or email contact@saturdaymusic.org.nz. It is in the student’s best interests to attend lessons in order to ensure consistent progress throughout the year. Thank you also to everyone whose students have arrived at lessons on time. That helps the tutors greatly!

Term dates – Are these on your calendar?
The dates for this term are:
May 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th, June 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th.

The Orchestra dates for this term are:
May 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, June 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th and July 7th.

PLEASE NOTE: The end of year concert will now be held on Saturday 24th November. Please note this date on your calendar.

Rotary Youth Music Festival
Congratulations to the 24 students who performed at the recent Rotary Youth Music Festival on the 26th May, as part of New Zealand Music Month. The violin students were well prepared and presented a classy set of items to the large audience at Café Royale in the Square Edge building. This was followed by the choir who shared their selection pieces they have been working on this year.

Thank you to Lydia McDonnell and Simon Lennard who supported these students towards making such a fine performance.

WANTED!
The Manawatu Training Orchestra has desperate need for two students who can help with playing percussion instruments. Timing and music reading are necessary, the rest of the training needed will be provided (our previous percussionist was a piano player!). Rehearsals are on a Friday afternoon. A discounted subscription may be considered. Please contact the Director if you have a student who is interested in this special opportunity.

REMINDER
All students are reminded to please leave their shoes outside the classroom before entering for lessons. Thank you for being mindful of our responsibility to care for the classrooms that we use.

Photography and recordings of classes
If you would like to take a photograph or a recording of your child during his/her class, please ask the permission of the class tutor first. If you would like to take a photograph or a recording of all of the students in the class, please ask the permission of the Director or Assistant Director first.

Changes of class time
Parents are welcome to investigate the possibility of a time change for your child’s lesson if there are clashes with winter sport or other activities. A change of class time depends on a place being available in another suitable class. We need to charge an administration fee of $5.00 per child per change of class time. Please do not attend another class without first getting the permission of the Director or Assistant Director. Tutors may be able to assist with recommendations but final class placements can only be confirmed with the Director.

Informal performances
Saturday Music instrumental classes are organizing a short informal performance session as part of the final lesson in Term 2. Parents are welcome to attend and to support their child in sharing music they have mastered. If you have any questions, you are welcome to discuss anything with your tutor.

While we are at PNINS …
Just a friendly reminder that there is no food or drink to be consumed inside the classrooms; please ensure classroom equipment is protected from interference; please ensure cars are only parked in the court area – obstruction of alleyways is a potential hazard in an emergency.

Items for sale
We do field inquiries about instrument purchases and also instruments for sale. We currently have a good quality ¾ size cello ready for a good home for $800.

Safety messages – Please remind your child about these
All efforts are made to ensure lessons are conducted with safe procedures. All persons must communicate to us any discovered hazards so these can be addressed as soon as practical. A first aid kit is available at the office should one be needed.
!!! Our greatest hazard is the car parking area !!! Please drive with all due concern for young pedestrians when on the PNINS site.

In case of the need for EVACUATION, all persons are to assemble on the grass field in a calm manner where the tutors will attend to confirming all students are present.

Keep up the great music learning efforts!

Kind regards,
Nigel Tongs (Director) and
Keiko Uchidate (Assistant Director)
