Term 4, 2020

A year like no other
It is hard to believe there are only three weekends in the Saturday Music year. There are certainly many things that we can all be thankful for.  On reflection it is quite reassuring that despite the difficulties our nation has faced since March, New Zealand is in a position where we can freely celebrate community activities, sports, and in particular music events.  One of the few places in the world where this can happen.  Who would have thought?

For us at Saturday Music, we can prepare to do what we can to celebrate the music learning that has occurred this year by the large number of children who have seen the year through.  Though we won’t gathering as a community on our last Saturday morning as we traditionally do, it is important that children sense that the music they have produced can be shared, celebrated and rewarded.  This newsletter will provide the details you need to know to help bring the year to a positive end and to prepare for what will be a more settled programme next year!

Open Day 2020
Saturday Music Open Day will be held on Saturday 14th November 2020.  The general public will be welcome to wander around the school observing classes in action and the Performing Arts Centre will be open with instruments available to try out as students explore opportunities for 2021.

Final classes
All our Music Basics and Instrument classes will continue on the 21st November.  Parents are invited to attend the class to celebrate the music learning and performance children will make at this final session for the year.  Tutors will confirm with their classes any special arrangements they are making with the parents of their students accordingly.

Manawatu Training Orchestra and Choir concert
The Manawatu Training Orchestra and Saturday Music Choir class will be collaborating to present a concert on November 21st, 2020, 7:00pm at the Christian Community Church buildings in Pascal St.  Entry is free (donations will be very welcome) and families are welcome to attend to see these groups in action.

Instrument hire and returns
Instruments can be returned and hired on November 21st at PNINS from 9:00am – 12:00pm in Room 13.  Instruments can be hired for the Summer period (Dec 2020 – Mar 2021) for $30.

Enrolments for 2021
Over 100 enrolments have been received already!  Enrolments can be completed on our website.  Confirmation of enrolment payments and subscriptions are currently experiencing delays, but these will eventuate soon!  Thank you for your patience.  Subscriptions received before Sunday 29th November 2020 will qualify for the reduced rate of $120 for 2021.  After this date subscriptions will be $130 per child per class for the year.

Tutor positions

We do have tutors who are moving on to University studies in 2021, and therefore will have tutor positions available.  Applications forms for these positions are on our vacancies page on our Saturday Music website.

We are especially interested in applicants to join our Music Basics team, working with children 4 – 6 years.  Please contact Nigel or Emma if you have any questions or inquiries.

FACEBOOK (Saturday Music) will post regular updates for parents regarding lessons and new events. Please follow our page and like anything you… like.

Saturday Music Charitable Trust
The Trust have negotiated a very challenging year.  As volunteers, they have all made significant contributions to ensuring Saturday Music continued to operate and to provide learning opportunities to all our enrolled students.  It is with much appreciation that we acknowledge Andrew Griffiths (Chair), Nancy Taneja (Secretary) and Annika McBrearty (Treasurer) as well as Kalolaine, Jamie Oemcke, Warrick Grady and Tim Carroll who supported Emma and I in sustaining Saturday Music.  What a team!

We wish to also thank the following supporters of Saturday Music this year:
Ben Lyne (Volunteer)
Chloe Grapentin (Volunteer)
The Staff of PNINS, particularly Hamish Ruawai (Principal), Barry Jones (PNINS liaison) and Heidi (Administration), as well as all the teachers who generously set their classrooms each week for us to use.
The Rockshop
Beggs Music Shop
Music Planet

2021 Handbook
Our Saturday Music handbooks are available at the front desk for the next three weeks.  It is also in PDF form on our website for folks to download.  It contains the dates for classes in 2021 as well as the key things people need to know for safety and to get the best out of the Saturday Music programme.

Thank you for all your support this year.  Emma and I wish you all a restful and safe summer break and we look forward to seeing you all in the new year.

Kind regards

Nigel Tongs (Director)
Emma Minchin (Assistant Director)
